Choosing between cast and forged grinding balls starts with your application. A product name or a single hardness value is not enough to establish which medium will give the best result in your mill. Use the following checklist to prepare a technical comparison with your supplier.
Start with operating conditions
Record the mill type, internal dimensions, liner arrangement, speed, feed material and feed size. State whether grinding is wet or dry, the required product size and the current media charge. Where available, provide operating records rather than a general description of the application.
Compare complete specifications
Request the material grade, chemical composition limits, size tolerance and agreed inspection methods for each proposal. Ask how hardness is measured and whether the quotation includes only surface results or additional cross-section measurements. Do not assume two products are equivalent because one reported hardness number is similar.
Define what a successful trial means
Before changing media, agree how you will evaluate consumption, breakage, output quality and operating stability. Record the baseline and keep track of changes in ore, feed rate, mill settings and media additions during the trial. A comparison is difficult to interpret when several operating variables change at once.
Compare cost on a consistent basis
Purchase price per tonne is one part of the decision. Include freight, handling, replacement frequency and the production outcome when those figures are available. Ask for the test conditions behind any quoted consumption or performance result; a result from another plant should not be treated as a guarantee for yours.
