Grinding balls and cylpebs describe different media shapes. Balls are spherical; cylpebs are cylindrical media specified by diameter and length. Shape is an important purchasing detail, but it does not by itself establish the better choice for a particular grinding circuit.
Check the equipment requirements first
Review the equipment manufacturer’s requirements and the plant’s current operating practice before changing media shape. Identify the mill, discharge arrangement, liner configuration and existing media charge. Make any proposed change part of a process review rather than treating it as a direct substitution based only on weight.
Write dimensions without ambiguity
For balls, specify the diameter and tolerance. For cylpebs, state both diameter and length, with their tolerances, and identify any additional shape requirements. Include the quantity for each size. Terms such as small media or micro media need numerical dimensions in an actual purchase specification.
Compare material and inspection requirements
Request the proposed material grade, composition limits and hardness inspection method. Confirm the sampling plan, batch identification and acceptance criteria. Comparing one supplier’s ball to another supplier’s cylpeb without aligning these requirements can mix the effects of shape, material and manufacturing specification.
Evaluate results under documented conditions
Define the output measurement, media consumption calculation and inspection schedule before a trial. Record feed changes, media additions and operating adjustments. Ask suppliers to explain the conditions behind performance claims and avoid assuming an improvement measured elsewhere will repeat in your application.
