There is no single ball size that can be specified from the finished product name alone. A useful selection discussion needs information about the feed, mill and required output. This guide explains what to collect before requesting a media size recommendation.
Describe the feed
Provide the material name and available feed-size distribution, including the top size. If the feed changes during normal operation, explain that variation. Include relevant laboratory results or plant observations, identifying the sampling method and date so that the supplier can understand what the figures represent.
Describe the mill and current charge
Record the mill model, dimensions, operating speed, liner arrangement and wet or dry operating mode. List the media sizes currently used, their approximate proportions and the normal replenishment practice. Photographs and the equipment drawing can help resolve uncertainty, but should accompany the operating information.
State the required result
Give the target product-size distribution or the agreed quality measurement, together with current throughput. Explain the problem you want to address: an off-spec product, unstable output, media consumption or another observed issue. A clear target makes it possible to evaluate a proposed change.
Plan the trial and records
Agree the starting media charge, addition schedule and sampling plan before a trial. Record additions by size and weight, operating hours, throughput and any changes in feed or settings. Compare results using the same measurement method. Avoid presenting a short trial as a long-term result without sufficient operating evidence.
Keep purchasing and process decisions connected
Once sizes are agreed, confirm dimensional tolerance, quantity by size, material specification and packaging with the supplier. Final media selection should be checked against the equipment requirements and actual operating conditions.
